Description
Heat treated Keokuk chert is a good choice for beginner knappers looking for a more economical material. It can be anything from a plain cream color, to having a variety of orange streaks and patterns. It is all heat treated and ready to work. It doesn’t have a cortex like many other rocks so it alleviates one of the issues that some beginner knappers have in skinning cortex. Note that Keokuk is a natural rock and tends to have inclusions, inconsistencies in grain quality, and occasional cracks~ Basically all the things that are to be expected from a natural rock. Some of the pieces look quite intimidating but typically clean up really nice thanks to the heat treating process. We have a great video on what to expect when knapping keokuk linked below. If you find yourself wanting to work a premium material that is very consistent, I would recommend trying our KnapEasy Product
