Description
Heat treated keokuk chert is a pretty friendly rock and a great choice for beginner and expert knappers. It can be anything from a plain cream color, to having a variety of orange streaks and patterns. It is all heat treated and ready to work. It doesn’t have a cortex like many other rocks so it alleviates one of the issues that some beginner knappers have in skinning cortex. It is typically pretty uniform in consistency making it one of the better choices for beginner to intermediate knappers. Some of the pieces look quite intimidating but typically clean up really nice thanks to the heat treating process. We have a great video on what to expect when knapping keokuk linked below.
